The neuroscience and spirituality of visualisation
This year I am privileged to work with an incredibly resilient and courageous client who suffered a major stroke. He chose a powerful path of healing, combining traditional stroke rehab, Reiki and visualisation and his recovery is continuing to defy the original dire outlook.
Visualising himself whole, coordinated, walking, running, dancing, holding his wife’s hand, tying a shoe lace, gently activates his brain’s neuroplastic healing pathways of full bodily function, mobility, and balance.
Visualisation is not a new technique in many different arenas – elite sports and performance training, neuroscience-based rehabilitation for stroke, chronic pain, phantom limb pain reduction for example. It is also actively employed in progressive organisations for creative problem solving and innovation, business strategy and leadership development.
Why is visualisation so effective? Both Neuroscience and Spiritual traditions provide compelling reasons.
Let’s start with the brain/body system.
When you vividly imagine an action, the same neural networks fire as when you physically perform it. Functional MRI studies show overlapping activity in the motor cortex, visual cortex, and cerebellum during both actual and imagined movement. This is why athletes and stroke patients use mental rehearsal to strengthen neural pathways for performance and recovery.
Repeatedly imagining an event or skill stimulates synaptic strengthening that underlies real-world practice. Over time, this creates more efficient neural circuits supporting the imagined outcome, influencing perception, behaviour, and even motor control.
The prefrontal cortex and hippocampus collaborate to simulate future scenarios. Visualisation recruits these regions to create a felt sense of possibility, helping to prime the nervous system for the outcomes we imagine.

Visualising high-emotion scenes triggers the amygdala, autonomic nervous system, and hormone responses as if the events were real. This is the basis for using imagery in stress regulation, motivation, and healing.
The visual association cortex and somatosensory regions are activated by imagined sensory input, so for example, in pain therapy, visualising coolness or numbness can reduce perceived pain intensity by altering sensory processing networks.
Aren’t we incredible beings? And there’s more from the spiritual perspective.
In many mystical traditions including Hermetic, Yogic, Indigenous, and esoteric Christian, the imagination is regarded as the creative faculty of the soul, where imagery, ritual, and dreams are revered as pathways to wisdom.
Visualisation is a key element of my spiritual coaching and annual process of the Mind & Magic of Manifesting. When we hold a clear visualisation infused with aligned feeling, our electromagnetic field (heart and brain coherence) begins to entrain to that frequency. And our experienced reality organises itself to our internal frequency. ‘As within, so without’.
When guided by clear and aligned intention and emotion, visualisation becomes an act of directed creation, bridging unseen potential into form. Visualisation is prayer in motion, an offering of consciousness into the divine fabric.

In my work as a psychic medium, the presence of a disincarnate person and psychic information about my clients, is first perceived as a frequency. Our Clair sentience is the primary perception of more subtle forms of information – we feel it first. This speaks to the reality that psychic images hold a vibration, they are information in the form of vibrating energy.
Energy healing modalities, like Reiki and Yoga Nidra for example, also evidence that vital life force flows to and activates what we place our attention on – including visualised potentials. Visualisation directs energy flow.
Visualisation acts as a signal to the quantum or subtle field, drawing experiences that match our inner vibration. The subconscious mind doesn’t distinguish between imagined and real, it responds to the emotional charge, or frequency. This opens the pathway for spiritual healing and new timelines of possibility.
To harness this innate and wonderful power, we need to overcome a few hurdles first.
Modern education and work culture value logic, data, and analysis over imagination. Visualisation, rooted in imagery, intuition, and feeling is often dismissed as “woo-woo” or unscientific, even though neuroscience shows it activates the same neural networks as real experience. We’ve forgotten that imagination is a form of intelligence, not its opposite.
Because visualisation happens internally, its power is easy to overlook. Many people believe only what they can see or measure, yet transformation begins in unseen neural and energetic shifts. The subtle nature of inner work makes it less immediately “provable,” so it’s undervalued in materialist cultures.
In a fast-paced world, we often abandon visualisation too early, before neural or energetic alignment has time to build. The unseen work of gestation feels “unproductive,” so it’s neglected.
Visualisation requires our creative faculty to operate unhindered by self-doubt or skepticism. When imagination is equated with fantasy rather than creation, its sacred role diminishes.
Generally our modern minds are dulled to inner vision. We are flooded with external imagery through our screens. We consume images rather than generate them, forgetting that the inner image is what shapes outer reality. And our modern minds are sorely dissipated. To be able to powerfully visualise, we need mind mastery first. This is why I require my clients to cultivate a daily meditation and mindfulness practice if they are to work with me.

One of our greatest superpowers is our ability to visualise. If you take the view that all life experiences start with a thought-form first – a blueprinted pattern that we can generate with our minds, it reframes our ability to visualise into something far more powerful than hopeful imaginings.
