The Way We Work Post-Pandemic

Recently Tesla’s Founder and CEO, and the richest man in the world, Elon Musk sent an ultimatum to his staff: To return to the office or get out! In some industries, there’s sympathy with the felt need for in-person connection and face-to-face collaboration again. I can see it in the upswing in corporate bookings I am getting for off-site conferences and team building. Some employees are meeting at these events for the first time in person, having started with the company several years ago. 

I’m also slightly loose on my definition of ‘post pandemic’. I’m writing this blog Covid positive in my cottage in the Blue Mountains in Australia. Aside from a running nose, I am asymptomatic. However, it feels to me that our understanding of ‘post pandemic’ is largely pegged to covid regulations rather than the virus itself. It continues to adapt and thrive. It’s time we did the same.  Now back to Musk! It was the language that he used when addressing the issue and his senior employees that has raised some big questions. Whilst Musk’s plan for world domination is slowly coming to fruition, there’s no doubt that he too has hardened to the task. As one of the most progressive thought-leaders the planet has, and ridiculously wealthy, there is no doubt that Elon Musk is an apex influencer. So, when he expresses himself publicly through words like the following, we should pay attention.

 “Moreover, the office must be where your actual colleagues are located, not some remote pseudo office. If you don’t show up, we will assume you have resigned.”

 ‘Remote pseudo office’…A clear downgrading of the work-from-home set-up. Yet all industries and workforces are voting for hybrid and greater work from home options. The reality is that the pandemic has shown us what’s possible and offered some significant cost reductions on office space leases. We have seen the rise of online collaborative and communication platforms and spaces and they’re working! 

I joined Crane Club (a shared workspace membership) here in Singapore back in 2019. Since then, I have used the snazzy vibey workspace for filming, photoshoots, podcast recording, events and meetings. It’s a fantastic community, aligned with my style and offering, and gorgeous spaces. Nothing pseudo nor remote about it. 

And some of the biggest players are investing much greater amounts into employee wellbeing and extra ‘true’ leave time.

 ‘Assume you have resigned’…not exactly world-class HR management there! Are we seeing a new side to Elon Musk? Slightly more draconian, and dare I say it…conservative?

 “The more senior you are, the more visible must be your presence,” Musk wrote.

 ‘Senior visibility’…this feels decidedly archaic to me. The Pandemic has also made many of us take a new look at leadership. The days of Senior Visibility are over. We are in the age of Wisdom Accessibility. As we navigated our businesses online over the last few years, the softer assets within the company became much more valuable: knowledge share, mentors, personalities, and stories. 

 And this new work world has also put a spotlight on two key things that have always been, but are now essential to post-pandemic success: the quality of your people and the quality of your culture & comms. 

 A remote team works best when it’s crystal clear what each team member brings to the table, and everyone takes personal responsibility for what they bring to the table. They’re good at what they do and don’t need to be micromanaged. Everyone is on program and working to exceed it. Everyone likes each other and communications are enabled, easy, courteous and fun.


Issuing an ultimatum shows the level of Musk’s exasperation with the impact on his labour force, but it also shows that he doesn’t trust them to get on with their jobs. Two other metric switches that the pandemic has raised in importance for post-pandemic survival, are the switches from hard work to smart work; from hours to outputs

 In recent weeks, Musk has praised Tesla’s China employees for “burning the 3 am oil” while saying that Americans are “trying to avoid going to work at all.” 

 Elon, really? Praising the 1980s & 90s hustle culture, especially from your Chinese contingent who have undergone the most devastating impact of the pandemic and endured the longest and harshest lockdowns on the planet. And are you equating ‘work for home’ to ‘avoiding going to work at all’? This attachment to the office has to be examined. It’s no longer as relevant as we thought. The ‘office’ will never be the same again.

 The thing is, that in a much, much, much, smaller way, I am also finding my way in the post-pandemic realm. My small but vibrant and growing business emerged into 2022, a vastly different offering to its 2019 pre-pandemic version. With group gatherings, retreats and talks suspended, I turned all of my attention to online content and connections. 

 It was a massive learning curve, however, I found the right people to work with. We are all enabled on collaborative platforms and we all like each other! I have gathered a small but brilliant team of five enablers around me, and we all work remotely, mainly because of locations. I had to get used to investing in these relationships, but it has created so much additional value that it has been worth it. Since 2020 I have commercialised and integrated my website, published a beautiful portfolio of guided meditation tracks and instrumentals on InsightTimer and Spotify, released four fabulous remixed lounge tracks and started my podcast The Modern Crone, which is now recording its third season. And I also published a book. Content. Content. Content. 

 Marie Nadal Sharma of Them you & Me, website and integration, is based in Melbourne and we have never met in person. 

 Luana Suciu is my visual artist, based in Sweden. We haven’t met in person in nearly three years.

 Sam Joole, an amazing musician and sound genius, is based in Sydney. Sam and I get together once or twice a year for a few days to record live and get creative, but the majority of our creations are made and published remotely. 

 Jan Young, from Expat Consulting, is now based in the UK  – bookkeeping, tax, company structure and LoC.  

 Kym Sng is my only Singapore-based team member. Kym manages the marketing and social media side. As I’m an early bird, and Kym kicks into gear after dinner, and I don’t have a fixed office address, we work remotely. We haven’t met in person since Kym came on board two months ago. 

 This little network of pros has adapted my business towards content generation and IP, and they continue to keep it adapting. And yes we’d all love to get together and meet in person, and that’s more because we like each other and feel like we’re building something together, which we are. 

 The reality is, that my little business also emerged from the pandemic having undergone some major shifts.

 My client base switched from 90% Singapore-based, 10% global, to 20% Singapore-based, 80% global. I am just as busy with my remote private sessions as I am with the in-person sessions in Singapore. The membership communities in my two signature courses Shape Shifting and Intuitive Healing are definitely global, as are the participants in my online meditation drop-ins and online psychic development circles.

Yet in my line of work, there is enormous power in physical presence, and face-to-face connection…to be seen and to see others and to engage in group practice and ritual. The retreats, groups and circles are important and beautiful. And nearly all of the corporate workshops and talks I am booked for are in-person offsites in Singapore. 

 I need a hybrid model and some thinking on how to keep engagement with me and with my offering, easy, enjoyable, inspiring, valuable, meaningful and magnetic…for all students, clients and collaborators, wherever they are based. 

 I have so many exciting ideas, more tracks, new courses, next book and (hopefully) more travel….it is clear that my priority has to be online community engagement. That’s where I’m upgrading next and I have a team who will get me there, remotely.

 So, Mr Elon Musk, I beg to differ. I think the same principles that work for my little outfit, are also relevant for global giants such as yourself. The days of micro-management, regimented hours, hustling and ultimatums have well and truly come to an end. And the talent market is so fluid now, also because it’s global and online, if your culture is blazing, you’ll attract the best out there. I think this is a much more positive perspective than ‘if you don’t show up I’ll assume you have resigned…’ Just saying…

Blitzing through the blur

5 effective strategies for maintaining wellness and performance through a work-life balance

I think we can all agree that life, opportunities and outlook have all become extremely blurry this year. It’s not only business outlook that has been thrown into the mist, but also the way we do business and how we ‘turn up’ fully to work with the physical workplace suspended or intermittently accessible.

There’s a definite repeating pattern occurring in my private one-to-one sessions. More and more people, while grateful for their jobs and work activities, are booking-in with ongoing mental tension, neck pain, disrupted sleep, strained relationships at home, digestive issues and perhaps most apparent, wavering self-confidence at work.

The augmented work connections via online platforms, voice calls, different communication processes and access to leadership have deprived many of the ‘soft comms’, the body language, spontaneous conversations and feedback that the physical workplace allows. In addition, for most of us, working from home has blurred the boundaries between work and private life. Wellness habits, natural breaks from work-related space and content, and accessing the outdoors have disappeared – unless we consciously reclaim them.

In many ways, this blurring of boundaries, as with so many aspects of this disruptive, disquieting year, has put the focus right back on how each of us can change and take charge of our wellbeing and responsiveness to the current situation. 

It appears that ‘the blur’ is reinstating self-mastery as the new superpower of the virtual work dynamic.

Here are my top tips for blitzing through ‘the blur’. They are small, micro-adjustments to self and process that yield incredibly powerful results.

1. Avoid the temptation to HUSTLE

I wrote about ‘The Hustle’ last year when a small business advocate posted this on his thread:

It’s an archaic notion that working into the wee hours defines your worth, value-creation abilities or even defines you as a creative entrepreneur. Much worse, it endorses a vicious cycle of imbalance. This is, without doubt, the mantra of the Dumb Hustler, and it just doesn’t inspire a growing number of people in business who have mastered the art of the Smart Hustle.

It has been a few years since I moved from roles within the corporate world into supporting people within it through wellbeing programs. These programs enable the maximum performance of a balanced, vital, human system through meditation and energy work. I know the hustle. Sometimes, depending on your sector and client time zone, you need to deliver at 3am. And in the year of ‘the blur’, you may be tempted to return to being available 24/7 and replying within a nano-second to all requests. I did it for years. But it’s not a sustainable operating mode.

Here’s the thing…if you’re up at 3am over-thinking,

you’re not well – and you’re a train wreck in the making.

There is now a plethora of research and deepening understanding of the human nervous system, about how the brain and body chemistry works best. Also, about how we can master dazzling performance by developing the skills to know and grow our inner landscapes, our minds, our awareness.

Let’s start with sleep.

There are many amazing sleep studies, all reporting slightly different requirements for vitality and top performance. The ones that I pay attention to come from the military and airline industries because there’s a greater impetus to get it right. There’s nothing more unsettling than the thought of a sub-optimal, fully armed soldier or commercial pilot. John Medina’s bestseller, Brain Rules, lays it out with startling clarity.

Here are some snippets:

  • Sleep is critical to wellbeing (obviously); however, recent research shows just how critical. In fact, advice on the amount of sleep required for healthy brain function has been revised upwards again to seven to nine hours.
  • One night’s loss of sleep results in about a 30% loss in overall cognitive skill. Bump that up to two nights, and the figure becomes 60%.
  • With 6 hours of sleep or less, per night, for just five nights, cognitive performance matches that of a person suffering from 48 hours of continuous sleep deprivation.
  • If a top-performing student gets just under 7 hours of sleep during weekdays, and about 40 minutes more on weekends, they will begin to perform in the bottom 9% of non-sleep deprived individuals. Cumulative losses during the week add to cumulative deficits during the weekend and, if not caught up, carry over to the following week.

Unless the Dumb Hustlers are getting to bed at 7pm each night, then they are perpetuating a cycle of lowering cognitive function and illness. Besides, seven to nine hours of sleep per night not only allows our active neurons to rest, but it also has a direct effect on the body’s ability to ‘clean’ the brain.

The glial cells are crucial for cleaning up the neurotoxins that build up in our brains throughout the day. When we don’t get enough sleep, these glial cells can’t do their job, and we end up with impaired memories and attention spans. Good sleep also allows the nervous system to ‘recalibrate’ and restore connectivity.

The impact of insufficient and poor-quality sleep makes attention falter, impairs memory and our ability to think through problems. It adds to the stress/overwhelm/stress cycle, making it harder to ‘bring the system down’.

When the Dumb Hustler switches on the lights at 3am including digital devices, they send a stream of photons into their system that tells the brain not to secrete melatonin, which is regulated via our circadian rhythm, that in turn is directly affected by light. With significantly increased screen time during ‘the blur’, understanding this and creating time off-screen is imperative.

We all know the frustration and emotional discharge of being tired. Fuses shorten, reactive patterns rise, all of which vastly affect our relationships and attractiveness as a business operator. Relationship and connection are the currencies of entrepreneurial businesses, and cognitive efficiency is the conduit.

Yet, even more alarming are the effects on long-term health. For the smarts on this, I asked one of the brightest natural medicine minds I know, International Naturopath, Kate Powe, what happens chemically in the body when we’re in the Dumb-Hustle-Cycle. Here’s Kate’s response:

“Sleep has a profound effect on metabolism, thyroid and immune function, mood and appetite regulation and subsequent development of chronic diseases such as obesity, metabolic syndrome, cardiovascular disease and T2 diabetes. Sleep deprivation can lead to higher levels of the hormones dopamine (wakefulness) and cortisol (stress and fat storage) and lower levels of hormones serotonin and melatonin (mood and sleep). This hormone dysregulation not only encourages a perpetuating cycle of wakefulness, but also promotes disruption to the appetite-regulating hormones leptin and ghrelin, increasing calorie intake, fat storage and insulin resistance. And with up to 21% of Australian women already suffering from insulin-related PCOS, along with the prevalence of cardiovascular disease and mental health disorders, downplaying the importance of sleep is not just unwise but irresponsible in the face of some of our greatest health challenges to date.”

The Smart Hustle is not ‘out there’ but ‘in here’. 

There now exists a large body of research that evidences the physiological and psychological benefits of nurturing mindfulness through meditation. The return to ‘mindfulness’ as an enabler for success and happiness is becoming a must-have for navigating ‘the blur’.

Regular meditation as part of employee wellbeing and organisational culture enables a specific set of benefits that are critical to organisational success. These benefits are generated through increased activity and structural changes in certain parts of the brain and nervous system. They include:

  • Adapting to change
  • Learning and assimilating new processes and information quickly
  • Lateral thinking, problem solving and innovation
  • Greater cognitive function generally
  • Better interpersonal relations, communications, and collusion
  • Improved resilience and calm emotional responses to stress and anger triggers

Mindfulness meditation creates a circuit-breaker to the pace of modern life and overtaxing of the adrenal system. Regular practice is also proven to:

  • Increase attention and presence
  • Increase performance and productivity
  • Improve sleep patterns
  • Reduce stress and burnout
  • Improve heart health and reduce blood pressure
  • Assist with overcoming addictions

In other words, a life-ward Smart-Hustle-Cycle.

Perhaps the most exciting development I am seeing is the increased awareness and utilisation of energy work with busy executives. My private sessions, especially the remote sessions, are also being booked up by the Smart Hustlers. They know that by connecting with vital life force and channelling it through their central nervous system, they harmonise the physical systems, heal dissonance in the mind and body, and are better equipped to switch to a smarter hustle.

2. Employ small disciplines

Employing small disciplines to maintain standards has a significant effect on our state of mind and sense of self-mastery. In ‘the blur’, it’s so easy to forgo these opportunities to generate psychological boundaries and bring a lifeward routine into the working-from-home day. Every day, make your bed, clear the dishes, clean surfaces, put items back in their place, establish a new filing system for home and work documentation, and respond to bills and taxes promptly.

During the COVID lockdown, I committed to waking early and exercising well before the working day. It has become a small discipline that has kept me clear and productive. The actions are secondary to the impact of determination, effort and a sense of completion. That’s where the gold is. And staying home, when everything is orderly, clean and visually appealing, impacts how others perceive you across the screen and the way you order your work responses.

3. Keep up appearances

Most of us are familiar with the sub-liminal yet high impact of appearances, both of the person and the space in which they dwell. In ‘the blur’, this is one aspect of self-management that can so easily slip. The simple act of getting dressed for work, even if you are just walking into a different part of the house to start work, creates an excellent psychic demarcation that allows a mental and emotional shift into work-mode. 

The advantage of online meetings is that it’s just the waist up that requires attention. However, also ensure that your background, desk, lighting and audio are clear, clean and visually appealing. The screen can fool us into thinking that we are somehow less exposed to those on the other side. Yet, in many ways, the opposite is true. Turn up fully, neatly clad to each meeting or call, as if you were walking into your boardroom at work. This shifts your sense of self, inspires others, and emanates the impression of mastery, on the inner and the outer, also maintaining performance through your work-life balance. 

4. Bring balance with sensory stimulus

The current work patterns in ‘the blur’ have us very much dwelling in our mental aspect. Critical thinking, scheduling (again), the increased screen time and less time outdoors have us cooped up in the world of thought. An excellent hack, that stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system, which governs our rest, digestion and sensuality, is to increase sensory stimulus into our homes and home workspaces consciously. Natural light, open windows, colour and scent, and if possible soothing sounds, have an enormous impact on our sense of wellbeing. 

I have been busy recently, recording audio lectures for my next online meditation course in a small corner of my spare room that I have ambitiously dubbed ‘the recording studio’. It’s away from the windows to minimise ambient noise. Yet, despite all the content being written and ready to go, I found myself swerving the recording work. I realised it was the feel of the space – clinical, hard lines, a corner, no colour. I started placing a single stem of tiger lilies in a long-stem vase every week in the space and the effect was immediate. The natural perfume, colour and beauty drew me like a magnet and helped me feel into the content I was recording. So simple, and so effective. Indoor plants not only provide this sensory stimulus but have the added benefit of cleansing and reoxygenating the air overnight. 

Another well-known counteraction to too much time in the head, is exposure to nature. While we may not have been aware of it, the workplace allowed us time outside. The dash for the lunchtime sandwich, the movement between offices for meetings, the transit to and from the office, all provided a hit of natural light, feet to earth movement and fresh air. Getting out is key, even if it is for a ten-minute breathing practice or to take sunshine to your face. Better still is to start and end each day walking somewhere green. This break in critical thinking drops you back into your body and allows solutions and creative ideas to ripen. It opens access to subtle connective fields that we are deprived of when working and dwelling in isolation.

5. Carve clear boundaries for yourself and communicate them

In ‘the blur’, the boundaries between ‘work time’ and ‘personal time’ seem to have vanished for many who are good at what they do and they appear to be always accessible. Late night and weekend client requests, global team meetings scheduled for the wee hours, and ever-tightening turn-around times are all part of the game now. However, what I am observing with my private clients is that managing this comes down to personal management and clear communications. 

Here are some examples of how you can enforce boundary clarity at home:

  • Maintain a designated workspace and don’t allow work activities to ‘leak’ into bedrooms, living areas and especially shared family spaces.
  • Prioritise tasks for the week and at the start of every day, and complete them. The sense of completion is one of our most underrated mental health boosters. Be clear on what you will achieve each day, complete it and let teams and colleagues know what you will be focusing on for the week.
  • Maintain content boundaries. Another temptation once we finally switch out of work mode for the day/evening is to scroll social media or flick through Netflix mindlessly. Content affects us very deeply, and it’s a great strategy to consciously choose something inspiring and uplifting to balance the work content. Absorbing this content through mediums other than a screen is also a great tip. I have taken to listening to inspiring podcasts twice a week on my morning bike rides. Within that two-hour ride, new worlds have opened in my mind and heart, which in turn play into my sense of possibility and ingenuity at work. 
  • Set your auto-response messages for the weekend and for any time during the week you do not want to be disturbed. If your clients and colleagues understand your priority for undisturbed time, generally, they will respect it. Make sure your auto-response requests that they get back in contact when stated. This way, you’re not adding to your mental load of remembering which calls to reply to later. 
  • Don’t be afraid to say ‘no’. I have had to learn this in my work. The nature of my work in mentoring and teaching is that sometimes a client will hit a patch and rather than think through possibilities, will instinctively call for guidance. In my earlier years, I would take the call, talk them through, and follow-up, regardless of the time of day or night. Of course, if it is a serious crisis, I will respond. However, I have learnt that it is almost always beneficial for both myself and the client that I say ‘no’, if the call is quite clearly within my personal time, like late at night or over the weekend. The demonstration of boundaries and prioritisation of myself and family can help others regain some perspective, pause, breathe and sense into the reality of what they are experiencing without the drama. 
  • Switch off your phone when with your family or on a break. Better still, leave it on your desk. The world won’t unravel within an hour, and you will be amazed at how much mental and sensory space opens up without that tiny gadget on your person for a spell. Try it and see!

Small conscious shifts such as these generate a felt sense and appearance of self-mastery – the essential state for current times.

The new dynamics of employee engagement and enrichment

If the engagements in the last couple of months are anything to go by, it appears that the corporate appetite for employee enrichment programs is back. New and existing corporate clients are getting back in touch, keen to explore ways to engage their teams and enrich their work experience within the new dynamics of a decentralised workspace.

This is hugely exciting, as businesses are recalibrating through the initial disruption to operations in the first half of 2020. Remote collaborative platforms have been tested and established, new communication processes are in place, business visions and strategies have been hashed out and work teams are adjusting to connection and collusion via voice and video.

Business culture commentary is awash with fantastic ideas on how to replicate the softer side of connection that was enabled through face-to-face contact in an office. As people’s work and home boundaries blur, team check-ins, time devoted to sharing beyond current workload, one-to-one calls for employees, greater flexibility on work processes and leave entitlements are all being experimented with.

This adaptability of business is always so impressive. It’s a testament to progressive thinking and the ingenuity generated when groups of minds work together on a common aim. It’s what we humans do best. We adapt.

There is a general acceptance that remote work modes, in some form or combination with office modes, are here to stay. recently dubbed the phenomenon the ‘Work from Home Revolution’, led largely by the tech quarter. Twitter, Square, Facebook, Shopify, Coinbase, Upwork, Lambda Schools and Barclays have all announced office closures until at least mid-2021, as the new requirement for office is being worked through and a transition to ‘remote-first’ systems is being stabilised. Surveys show this is the preference for the majority of employees too.

Most industries recognise the importance of the office within this new mix of alternatives. However, its role and purpose are being redefined. The commentary is moving from ‘workspace’ to ‘workplace’ and new technologies for hot-desking and ensuring place hygiene and people’s safety in a world where pandemics are now an accepted reality, are on the rise.

Hand-in-hand with the adaptation of workplace and processes is the shift in employee engagement and enrichment requirements. This requirement to adapt employee support has seen an evolution in the area.

Early in my career, I was involved in award-winning culture change programs in Australia’s financial services industry. These programs enabled front-line workers to better serve customers – a people-oriented approach. I worked with an organisation that went on to lead the way in progressive workspaces and employee enablement, wellness and development programs – now commonplace, yet key to attracting talent. I was associated with the adoption and evolution of psychometric testing in the workplace, the acceptance of emotional intelligence as a viable and vital aspect for leaders and teams, and the return to vision and core values defined by the entire organisation. That is, the ‘soft skills’ within an organisation were being recognised as the hidden superpowers. I participated in the digital revolution of workspaces and work modes, unprecedented connectivity and the ability to generate a business plan, strategy, or client proposal in a continuous ongoing wave of creativity across teams around the world.

Now, more than ever, the emphasis for employees is on their ability to self-manage in all areas…their wellbeing, their mental clarity, their emotional resilience, and their energy levels.

It is becoming clear that Self-Mastery is emerging as the new superpower of the high-performance employee. When discussing the briefs with my corporate clients for new employee engagement and enrichment programs, the priorities currently are three-fold: connection, self-mastery skills and fun bonding, and all deliverable via online platforms.

For me, it has meant a change-up in my programming. The delivery across online platforms has provided some clear efficiency and reach advantages. Sessions can now be easily recorded and made available to other teams outside of timezones or those unavailable to join live. Links to supporting materials and ongoing feedback as well as tracking of session impact and engagement are immediate. And there is a cost advantage when venue and event planning are off the table.

However, the new challenge is to incorporate into the programs, experiences that enable the same wonderful dynamics achievable when a team is together in one space: the bonding, humour, sharing, inspiration.

There is still a requirement for the usual instruction and guidance on meditation and mindfulness techniques and particularly in the areas of stress management, sleep management, improved cognitive function and emotional resilience. However, what I am finding when I send through proposed program outlines, is that employees are also interested in understanding their energy system, and the use of traditional techniques like mudra and breathwork. A new client in funds management, one which I would have pegged to respond to a more conservative program, after surveying its employees, has asked for sessions around energy healing. And for a global online industry event next month in insurance, I will be leading a practice in heart-centered intelligence. This is new!

The key for employee engagement and enrichment programs is to stay fluid and responsive to what people are asking for – not just the management, but the teams they are providing the programs for. So my proposals have switched to a more extensive menu of possibilities, which are then taken to employees for their preferences.

I am including new modules on cultivating creative thinking through meditation and exercises in creative expression, self-enquiry and conscious behavioural change. Included in the mix now are opportunities for some healthy team competition. So, not only are employees exploring new perspectives on the mind/body/energy system, their creative capacity and approaches to wellness, we are also including metrics and ongoing engagement so that they can, as a team, engage and share their progress with the techniques.

The other aspect I am focussing on is a greater emphasis on movement and somatic meditations, which gets them up from their desks in their homes and working with their bodies in new ways to enter present awareness, move energy through their system and clear the mind.

It’s an exciting time in Employee Enrichment; one where science, energy work and self-empowerment are coming together in the corporate space, across the ether.

How cultivating a Spirit of Giving is good for business

Businesses, by their very nature, are conduits for flow. They connect solutions to challenges, supply to demand, talent to expression, people to community, production to end-use, investment to returns. Yet many businesses don’t ‘invest’ in the energetic principles of flow through giving as cultural imperatives in their communities. 

Recently, I had the pleasure of being interviewed by Alex Loh here in Singapore as part of his Community Builders Speak series (links to the transcript and full YouTube video at the end of this blog). The interview revolved around the key elements I employ in my business, that cultivate a loyal and vibrant community. 

The conversation turned to giving as a catalyst for flow. I have complete certainty that my commitment to gifting a significant chunk of revenue each month to causes that support underprivileged and at-risk people in communities, and the environment, has a direct impact on both the vibrancy and growth of my community and revenue growth. It’s an energetic principle that I live and work by very consciously.

But it’s a tricky topic, which Alex brilliantly asked about. How can you be truly altruistic, knowing that when you give, you’re attracting growth? Doesn’t the motivation affect the act?

It was a good question, and I believe it’s a matter of a paradigm shift on the nature of abundance and how motivation and goal align through action. Sharing abundance and attracting abundance are not mutually exclusive; they are aspects of one movement of giving.

The sharing of abundance is a principle that exists in nearly every spiritual framework and in many, it is mandated. One could easily make sense of this as a societal survival strategy. That is, as a society and as communal creatures, there’s an inherent responsibility to share wealth and skills so the most underprivileged of us have some form of support and possibility to change their circumstances. This, after all, is the mechanism of economic fiscal policies the world over…how effectively this is managed can be debated, of course. However on a global scale, with such apparent polarisation of wealth and opportunities, it’s difficult to see this communal responsibility being taken seriously. I believe this is because we have a limited view of the true energetic nature of abundance and generation through flow

Our profit-driven models are based on an assumption that there is a finite supply of abundance. Therefore it must be competed for, captured, retained and leveraged. From a mundane world-view, this makes sense. However, from a spiritual view, this paradigm is counter to the true nature of abundance, be it in revenues, clients, innovation, creative ideas, or talent, all of which operate, through flow

Flow is when our bodies, minds, hearts and spirits are aligned and connected with our life field, consciously, with purpose. The same principle can be observed in the collectives of people, like in a business. When we are in a state of flow, we are happy and in my observation, people and businesses that operate in flow are well, vital, grateful, successful, purpose-driven and fulfilled. Being in flow doesn’t mean we don’t experience challenges; this is simply the nature of life. However, it does mean that we move through them quite differently – with presence, grace and ingenuity.

Flow allows a momentum, which steers us to higher possibilities because flow brings the realisation that we, our life field, our relationships and all that we experience are inextricably linked. Flow also enables greater flow. Just like the way a healthy, flowing river shapes and widens its banks, flow expands our awareness and capacity. It vastly changes our inner landscape and connection with life and business, our markets, clients and employees. 

In my own business, I can see the vibrant effects of flow each month in a number of ways. Every month I donate all proceeds from my fortnightly meditation drop-ins and women’s circles, as well as a portion of revenue from courses, talks and private sessions. I usually choose to support the vulnerable, usually children, women, and the environment. If there is an immediate current need that presents, like victims of a natural disaster, or COVID or supporting awareness and advocacy for anti-racism, then these causes take priority in any given month. When I set up my business in Asia six years ago, I set up this goodwill flow. My motivation for doing so was pretty simple. The polarization of wealth in the region is just so apparent. Within Singapore itself, and in surrounding countries within a stone’s throw in any direction, there is great need. For me, it felt important. It was also a way I could honour this region that was hosting me, my family and our businesses. At the start, the donations were small, and I also started donating my time at a local children’s centre for underprivileged and at-risk kids. As the revenue grew, so did the support I was able to offer. And very quickly I could see the direct correlation.

Now I can maintain a discretionary fund to sponsor sessions with clients that may have had their finances drained, yet are strongly drawn to energy work. Cancer patients who have lost work, or have undergone extensive expensive medical treatments are an example, or people needing emotional support during a challenging divorce and have been denied finances. With an understanding of the dynamics of flow, I am able to open access to energy healing and inner practice guidance to people who arguably need it most. 

People in my community are engaged for many reasons, but I believe the main underlying reason is that they sense an alignment of values. They feel like they belong to something that satisfies their own sense of altruism and flow. Everyone is aware of the donations and they readily pay the drop-in amounts or discretionary donations for the circles very generously. For my corporate clients, I believe the knowledge that a percentage of the program fees is being donated to help others in the same region where they operate, also makes a difference when engaging me. 

But perhaps slightly harder to explain, yet observable every single month, is when I release the pledged funds to the nominated cause, that is, when the money is released into flow, every single time, there is an influx of bookings and enquiries within the days and week that follow that release. 

So returning to Alex’s question, my motivation for giving has always been altruistic. However, in putting that ‘Spirit of Giving’ into action, I have observed that it also generates growth in my community and business activities. Goals, motivation and action have aligned. It’s an observed movement that the Buddha once referenced when asked if the motivation for self-mastery, which is intrinsically selfish, in any way defeated the action. He responded that it doesn’t really matter what the initial motivation to better oneself is, because the action and results will correct the initial motivation. Giving and flow bring alignment. 

In esoteric practice, on an individual level, vitality, love, abundance and fulfillment are aspects of flow and giving them unconditionally and consciously triggers their movement into and through our life experience. And, it has a multiplier effect.

For collectives such as a business, these four flows could be translated to:

Vitality = Cultural and business vitality, innovation, creativity, problem-solving, inventive collaborations, workspace vibe, employee enthusiasm, business expansion

Love = Loyalty, mutual respect, diversity, non-judgement, empathy, environmental respect, customer sovereignty, honesty, clear communications, enrichment

Abundance = New markets, new business, healthy pipelines, expansion, revenue growth, client-base growth, profit-share, R&D investment, cultural investment, wage growth, brand equity

Fulfillment = clear vision, core values alignment, purpose, social and community responsibility and giving back, employee satisfaction and wellbeing. 

The Spirit of Giving in business can be expressed in so many different ways. There is the obvious way of donating a percentage of revenue or time and talent to a worthy cause within the communities and environment where the business operates. But it can also translate into other smaller, yet highly meaningful actions. 

Within the employee community, for example, a culture of affirming and recognising talent, great ideas and work well done can be cultivated consciously. And this is contagious. Creating opportunities for the entire team, regardless of role and responsibility, to put forward ideas for business and process improvement is also a form of giving and always yields fantastic insights into better, more streamlined approaches.

With client communities, a focus on providing an excellent experience and service at every single point of contact generates customer loyalty and referrals. It’s not rocket science, I know, but it’s amazing how many small businesses do not employ this form of giving.

Simply going through the exercise of identifying where the business can employ the Spirit of Giving, internally and externally within the communities that host and hold the business operations is worthwhile in itself. It’s an action that starts the process of alignment, which then enables flow.  

For individuals that I mentor, I suggest that they start with those aspects of their lives they feel are lacking. Here are the clues for where to give. The same exercise can be employed by business teams. What aspects of the four areas of flow are stagnant or shrinking? This exercise can identify a series of adjustments to employee and client engagement and social responsibility, which can yield measurable results. 

The Spirit of Giving is actually a lens through which to view our life or business and our connection to it, and it is one of the most potent forces we have at our disposal to generate flow.

In this year of total disruption, the biggest invitation we have is to explore new paradigms for self and business and redefine how we operate. With the playing field shifting for all businesses, now’s the time!
