A mythic approach to global disruption
Let’s face it…the world has tipped into a reality of mythic proportions. If we pop our ‘Game of Thrones’ lens on, a quick audit will confirm the undeniable hallmarks:
- Widespread pestilence….Check!
- Powerful Over Lords threatened….Check!
- Large scale suffering and death of the vulnerable…Check!
- Posturing of war, invisible enemies and victory…Check!
- Societal structures undermined…Check!
- Rise of ground-up revolutionaries and new communities…Check!
- Prophets and seers proven right…Check!
- Battening down of hatches and ramparts raised….Check!
- Planetary alignments and numerological markers…Check!
- General wailing and gnashing of teeth…Check!
For many of us, we are tinkering on the edge of fascination and fear as we witness the wave sweeping the planet and the twists and turns of the collective response. This is the stuff of the Iliad’s, the Old Testament, the Book of Revelations, the Mayan Calendars, the Shamanic prophesies, the Sci-Fi Oracles. And what does every mythic quest call for?
A personal invitation to the Hero’s journey and a Noble Quest!
My teenagers have been exploring The Hero’s Journey in their online literature classes and the archetypal stages involved. And it’s so easy to see these stages playing out across the globe, especially as we witness new communities experiencing the hit of the initial fear waves, the total disruption to the status quos, the call to engage (‘adventure’ might be a debatable term for some), the assistance of the authorities in social guidelines, the realisation that: A: they don’t have the full handle on the nature of the situation, B: the impact was totally underestimated on existing systems and C: it all comes down to individual responsibility. AKA…we’re all on the Hero’s Journey. We all must define and choose our personal approach.
What is fascinating about the current events is that we are very much being forced into a realisation that we as an individual and us as a collective are one and the same thing. Each and every one of us must take responsibility to ‘flatten the curve’ as it’s the spread which is killing and overwhelming health and fiscal structures. This incredibly clever bug is able to spread through asymptomatic people.
From analysis here in Singapore, through their incredible contact tracing methods, they have worked out that the local spread is due to people being in contact with infected others who feel great and have passed the virus on around four days before onset of symptoms. We now know that many of us are carriers and have never felt better nor will have any onset of symptoms. If any one of us doesn’t adhere to the hygiene, social distancing, homestay guidance, we could very easily be a propagator of the ‘high curve’.
For the first time, in perhaps ever, the world is being given a real time simulation of Oneness Consciousness.
Every single one of us, quite literally, are holding the world in our hands.
In my online communities, the discussion is rich, interrogative and fierce currently. The collective wisdom within these groups when a question is posed, a dream is shared, vulnerability is exposed, is a force of nature. These circles are sacred ground and there are times when someone calls simply to be witnessed as they express their feelings and ponderings. There are other times when someone needs a tilt, a different perspective as they have been swept into an eddy and can’t find their flow.
One such discussion ensued recently. Beautiful wisdom was shared of techniques, mantras, mudras, energy practices and circuit-breakers. All powerful and all beautifully offered in alliance and compassion. Some of them I have written about in my last few articles Creative Fear and Ostara’s Crowning.
For me it was a beautiful opportunity to interrogate what is working for me. Aside from the strong draw to immersion in wilderness, breathwork, energy practices and journaling, my usual and tried and trusted approaches…and they work, what rose with great clarity was how powerful it is to take on a noble attitude; to view the current situation through a mythic lens and to respond accordingly; to engage in a Noble Quest!
This is a summary of six key responses to amazingly lucid enquirers in my groups. I am sending it out here to those who have an established inner practice, yet are feeling the urge to ramp things a notch in the energy-stakes and widen the inner view beyond the self, because you are feeling the call to the Noble Quest.
Assume a Noble Purpose
Rather than receiving and being wobbled by the collective field, acknowledge that you are feeling and aware of it, because you have a role to play….to assist in the healing.
Breathe for others
Do your breathwork and expand your field to breathe with and for those who can’t, don’t know how to, or wont.
It’s a numbers game
When you stop, reflect and choose a higher response, acknowledge that that very act (as personal and small as it may seem) is tipping the collective scale to make it easier for others to do the same.
Become a proxy
When you do heart-centred meditations like loving kindness, gratitude, Metta, Tonglen, make your heart the proxy for the world heart and run the energy and healing to the whole. When you practice forgiveness and blessing mantras, bring in large groups rather than personal relational contacts.
Respond to intuitive prompts
Always act on intuitive prompts to contact people when they come to mind with an associated voltage.
Engage fully with your spiritual communities
If you find yourself in an eddy or contracting tail-spin, reach out to your spiritual community. This is not the time for shyness, shame, aversion or attachment. Even simply expressing how you’re feeling and having it witnessed is hugely powerful and healing. A noble attitude heals you and everyone you are blessing. It’s a wholesale move!
We are on a Noble Quest. There’s no coincidence that spiritual groups are organising and growing all over the world. We have a role to play and it’s both personal and collective, because what has become crystal-clear, is As Above, So Below; As within, So without; As the Universe, So the Soul.
