The Importance of a Teacher
The mind and body can be seen as the instruments that enable the skill and experience of meditation. When learning any new skill or coordination of an instrument a practiced teacher is essential. A teacher brings the knowledge required to understand the forces engaged with meditation, precision of technique, feedback and a sounding board for observation and common markers along the journey. To explore the nature of your own consciousness from within your own mind requires some navigation skills, and certainly at the outset, a guide.
There are many ways to learn how to meditate. Self-guidance offerings on-line and through books, may help the student achieve the goal of self-relaxation, however they are limited in guiding the student towards mastering the techniques required of the mind and body to be able to return to a state of meditation at will. Most self-guided methods are derived from Eastern traditions yet it is those same traditions that advocate the necessity for a good teacher.
